Chapter 2
WHEN JANE GOES TO THE PARTY…
LUCAS - Hi ! Jane ! I thought you weren’t going to come ! It’s quarter to nine, already !
JANE - Hi Lucas. I’m so sorry I’m late. I’m afraid I don’t have a good excuse. Actually, I couldn’t decide what to wear – I wasn’t sure if it was smart or casual dress. I hope I don’t look too stupid in this dress.
L - Of course not ! You look great ! Come on, what would you like to drink ?
JANE - I’d love a diet Coke. I’m really thirsty.
L - I’ll go and get us a drink and then we can go outside for a bit.
JANE - That sounds like a great idea. It’s really hot in here. I’ll wait for you here, shall I ?
L - Yep, see you in a minute !
A FEW MINUTES LATER…
JANE - Oh, thanks. How much do I owe you for the drink ?
L - Don’t worry, the drink’s on me. It’s my pleasure.
JANE - Are you sure ?
L - Of course. Anyway, you can buy me a drink later ! What do you think of the party, then ?
JANE - It’s great. Thanks for inviting me.
L - What are you parents doing this evening ?
JANE - They’ve gone out for a romantic dinner together to a fancy seafood restaurant. I’m quite glad really because I hate seafood.
L - Really ? I love seafood, especially “noix de Saint Jacques”. How do you say that in English ?
JANE - Oh, I think they’re called scallops. But I’m not one hundred per cent sure. You French love talking about food don’t you ?
L - Well, we have excellent food, don’t you think ? Not like you English. My teacher told us that you eat funny things like baked beans for breakfast and mint sauce with roast lamb.
JANE - That’s delicious ! English food is really good, especially the traditional English breakfast – bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, baked beans… Yum ! You say English food is horrible, but have you ever tried English food ?
L - Um, no.
JANE - Well, then. You will have to come and visit, and try some real English food. I’m sure you’ll like it !
L – Maybe it’s not so bad … By the way, what time do you have to get back ?
JANE – My parents wanted to pick me up at half past ten, but I managed to convince them to come and pick me up at half past eleven.
L – Cool. That means we’ll have plenty of time to dance.
JANE – Yeah ! The music here’s great.
L - I know. It wasn’t so good at the beginning of the evening, but it’s better now that the DJ is here.
JANE – What kind of music do you usually listen to ?
L - Oh, all sorts. I like French rap music a lot.
JANE – Oh, I hate rap, especially 50 Cent and rappers like him.
L - No, I’m sure you’d like French rap. Diam’s is a French girl rapper. She’s really popular in France, especially with girls. I like the rhythm and the beat of rap music.
JANE – I much prefer listening to R n B, like Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake. But that’s not my favourite kind of music. I love rock groups like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day. I like Lily Allen too. She’s English.
L - Yeah, I know her. She’s not bad. I like Red Hots too, but my parents hate it when I play it really loud in my room !
JANE – Oh, cool ! The DJ’s playing Mika ! I love his music!
L – Oh, not you too ! All the girls at my school love him ! I don’t know why !
JANE – Oh, he’s really cute. He’s got a great voice, and he’s really good-looking! Come on, let’s go and dance before my parents come to pick me up!
